Former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton gave Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau beaming praises for being a "trailblazer" on Friday while making claims that conservatives are "undermining democracy."
Clinton, who was the keynote speaker at the Liberal Party's biennial convention in Ottawa, joined Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland on stage and the two likened Trudeau as being a "martyr" for women.
"I personally am just delighted to be here," Clinton said. "In many ways, the Liberal Party of Canada is a trailbreaker. And the things that over the history of this party you have achieved for Canada have not only improved the lives and opportunities of your fellow Canadians, but have also, you know, sort of set a trail for others to try to follow."
Freeland then spoke to the audience and praised Prime Minister Trudeau for being a "feminist" and said he is "getting beaten up" on the frontlines by his political opponents to "break the trail" for women.
"One of the things that is remarkable about his leadership is...he is a truly feminist Prime Minister," Freeland said. Adding, Trudeau "is the guy skiing in front, breaking through the snow, getting beaten up."
As the evening progressed, Clinton touched on the topic of online "disinformation" and warned for the need to prepare. She said that conservatives are "undermining democracy" by "dismissing" freedom of press.
"There is a sad, unfortunate, development in a lot of our democracies. There's an attraction by forces largely on the right that are undermining democracy because of their disregard for institutions, their dismissal of a free press, their denial of minority rights, all of that which is happening in my own country and elsewhere," Clinton claimed. "So, I think you just have to be highly alert to this. Do not dismiss it."
Clinton's comments were made after the Canadian government recently passed Bill C-11, otherwise known as the Online Streaming Act, which gives the Tudeau government the ability to crackdown on independent media and censor speech that they believe is "controversial" and "unpopular" on the internet.
Despite significant parliamentary scrutiny and years of political pushback, Bill C-11 will now grant the Trudeau government to regulate all content published online.
The former secretary of state concluded her keynote speech by warning the Liberal Party to continue their fight against online misinformation, which directly aligns with the "Orwellian" law they just passed.
"You will be running in 2025 and you will face more online fakes — fake videos of you, fake videos of the prime minister, fake videos of other leaders of the Liberal Party," she said. "This is coming, so get ready, and try to prevent as much as you can, but also protect against it."
