Top court restores gay-friendly 'parents' tag to ID docs (4)

(ANSA) - ROME, APR 9 - Italy's top court has restored the gay-friendly 'parents' tag to Italian ID cards replacing 'father' and 'mother' as discriminatory against same-sex couples, at least for partners with adopted children.
The supreme Court of Cassation said the use of the terms father and mother was "discriminatory against couples of the same sex".
It rejected an appeal from the interior ministry.
The ruling inevitably provokes political reactions and associations that fight for gay rights and the opposition are rejoicing.
For the rights manager of the Democratic Party and MEP, Alessandro Zan, it is a "historic ruling, which establishes a firm point: the protection of the rights of all children is a priority. Denying a girl or a boy an identity document that represents 'the legitimate conformations of family units' is a serious and discriminatory violation. The ideological crusade carried out by the right against rainbow families is thus shattered against reality, with the imposition of Matteo Salvini's wording and with the various appeals of the current Minister of the Interior Piantedosi.
"A hypocritical rhetoric, also ridden by Giorgia Meloni, who has used the rights of many girls and boys for pure political speculation".
Arcigay, the Rainbow Families and the Lenford Network, which provided legal support to the two mothers involved in the legal case, speak of a "victory".
"At a time when those who govern hinder the life and happiness of families that do not fit into ideological canons - they comment - the Court of Cassation reiterates once again a fundamental point: the true interest of minors is that their family reality be recognized for what it is. The real damage would be to ignore it or deny it. After these sentences, the only desirable solution is the annulment of the Salvini decree".
Fabrizio Marrazzo, spokesperson for the Gay LGBT+ Party, underlines how the Court of Cassation has "demolished a discriminatory circular", a push for the expansion of rights "such as the referendum on equal marriage on which we ask for a commitment from all political forces". (ANSA).
