Catholic church warns of assisted dying bill ‘danger’

Catholic church leaders have said that medical professionals should be “caring for people not killing them” as MSPs prepare to consider legalising assisted dying.

After a final proposal for an assisted dying bill was lodged at the Scottish parliament, church leaders described the plans as “dangerous”.

The proposals won the backing of 76 per cent of more than 14,000 respondents to a public consultation. It attracted more responses than any other public consultation in the history of the Scottish parliament.

Liam McArthur, the Scottish Liberal Democrat MSP, announced he was lodging his proposal for a bill, the third time such an attempt to legalise assisted dying has been made in Scotland.
