RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Chile’s Parliament resumed on Tuesday, June 15, the discussion of a bill that allows same-sex marriage, stuck since 2017, after the country’s president, Sebastián Piñera, publicly supported it and granted “urgency” character to its processing.
The initiative, presented during the second government of former President Michelle Bachelet and which could make Chile the eighth Latin American country to legalize gay marriage, will be discussed first in the Senate and then in the Chamber of Deputies.
In a reversal of his position on equal marriage, the conservative president surprisingly asked legislators on June 1 to treat the bill with “urgency”, a mechanism that allows speeding up its parliamentary processing.
